Utagawa Kuniyoshi: The Palace of the Dragon King 1000-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861) / The Palace of the Dragon King

The legend of Tamatori-hime (“jewel-taking princess”) tells of an ama (pearl diver) who infiltrated the Dragon King’s underwater palace to reclaim a sacred jewel stolen from the Fujiwara clan. She lulled the king and his guards to sleep with music, seized the jewel, and fled — but when pursued, cut a hole in her chest to conceal the pearl inside, sacrificing her life to complete the mission. The tale captivated Edo-period artists; Kuniyoshi alone produced at least four separate prints of the scene.
