The West Wing by Edward Gorey
The West Wing is Edward Gorey’s wordless tale, originally published in 1963. Across 31 drawings, it moves through rooms and long corridors where wallpaper peels to the floor, a candle held by invisible hands lights the dark, unexpected figures appear, and a boulder sits on a table. The sequence leaves the building’s haunting unexplained.
The book first appeared in The Vinegar Works: Three Volumes of Moral Instruction, alongside The Gashlycrumb Tinies and The Insect God.
