Edward Gorey: His Book Cover Art & Design by Steven Heller
Edward Gorey: His Book Cover Art & Design surveys Gorey’s dust jackets and paperback covers, with a broad selection of work created from 1953 to 2000. Gorey began designing covers for New York publishers including Doubleday, Grosset & Dunlap, and Vintage Books, and later worked with Random House. The book shows how his finely crosshatched illustration and dark humor shaped his approach to cover design.
Steven Heller’s essay examines Gorey’s work as an artist and designer. Heller writes, “Successful cover design requires the expertise of an artist, typographer, poster designer, and logo maker. Many book design specialists were incapable of designing a cover or jacket with the same Gorey aplomb, even if they tried.”
