Diego Rivera (Mexican, 1886–1957) / Detroit Industry, north wall (mural detail), 1932–1933

During the Great Depression, Rivera received a commission from William Valentiner, director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, to paint the walls of the museum’s classical Garden Court — funded by Edsel Ford, president of the Ford Motor Company. Rivera spent days sketching at the Rouge River factory, which provided the imagery for the mural’s largest panels, including the section reproduced here.
