Marissa Zappas - Carnival of Souls
Emerging from a Cadillac plunged deep beneath the muddy tide surfaces Mary Henry – the sole survivor of a car accident and protagonist of the 1962 b-horror movie Carnival of Souls. After the crash, Mary spontaneously moves to Utah to start over and work as a church organist. She develops the ability to become invisible and dances with ghosts in a seductive, electric dimension. Mary's journey into the underworld coincides with her insatiable curiosity for something more than a life of fear, and the film poignantly suggests that a dance with her demon is the only way through to the other side.
Carnival of Souls emanates a melancholic celebration of life (and death), and the
radiant psychedelia of survival.
