The Pliocene Epoch is a geologic time period that lasted from about 5.33 to 2.58 million years ago. The early-to-mid Pliocene was relatively warm and wet, with temperatures and sea levels higher than today, and atmospheric carbon dioxide close to or slightly above modern levels. Over the course of the epoch, a drying and cooling trend expanded grasslands, savannas, and deserts while forests shrank, leading into the chillier cycles of the Ice Ages.

The Isthmus of Panama formed during the Pliocene, connecting North and South America. The closure of the Central American seaway altered global ocean currents and deep-water circulation, setting the stage for future Northern Hemisphere glaciation. Continents shifted to positions very close to where they sit today, pushing up major mountain chains.

During the Great American Interchange, land animals crossed the new Isthmus of Panama: ground sloths, armadillos, and porcupines moved north, while cats, dogs, and bears moved south. Mammals took on a largely modern appearance, with diverse grazing herds of camels and horses (such as Equus) alongside mastodons and saber-toothed cats. Hominins continued to evolve, and by the end of the epoch, early human ancestors, including Australopithecus and the first members of the genus Homo, were walking upright in Africa.
