Dance of Death - Postcard

The Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, is a Late Middle Ages artistic and allegorical genre featuring a skeleton or personified Death leading people from all walks of life, from popes and emperors to peasants and children, in a dance to the grave.

It emerged in the 14th century, likely rising out of the devastating impact of the Black Death and cemetery dramas in which actors dressed as skeletons.

The genre acts as an equalizer, reminding everyone that mortality is universal and indifferent to wealth, power, or social class. Hans Holbein's Dance of Death woodcuts (1523–1526) are among the most famous printed realizations of the motif.
