Altarpiece, No. 1 belongs to Hilma af Klint's 1915 Altarpieces series, the finale of her monumental Paintings for the Temple. A tall triangle of graduated color rises toward a glowing circle, a vertical composition built from pure geometry.

Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was painting radical abstraction years before Kandinsky or Mondrian, guided by her interest in spiritualism and the unseen world. She kept most of her work private and asked that it not be shown until at least 20 years after her death. Today she is recognized as one of the pioneers of abstract art.
