Hayao Miyazaki by Jessica Niebel
Hayao Miyazaki accompanies the 2021 inaugural exhibition at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, organized in collaboration with Studio Ghibli in Tokyo. The exhibition was the first North American retrospective dedicated to Miyazaki. This book presents hundreds of original production materials, including artworks previously unseen outside Studio Ghibliโs archives.
Concept sketches, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, and production cels trace Miyazakiโs early career through all 11 of his feature films, including My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kikiโs Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), and Howlโs Moving Castle (2004). The materials offer a look at his animation process and his recurring themes of childhood, growing up, natural settings, and complex characters, including strong girls and young women.
