Morrisseau is among the most significant artists of the 20th century and is widely regarded as the grandfather of Canada’s contemporary Indigenous art. Drawing on Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation practices and oral histories passed on by his grandfather, he developed a visual language built from two-dimensional shapes, bold black outlines, and unblended vibrant colors.
