Edward Gorey: His Book Cover Art & Design by Steven Heller

Edward Gorey: His Book Cover Art & Design surveys Goreyโ€™s dust jackets and paperback covers, with a broad selection of work created from 1953 to 2000. Gorey began designing covers for New York publishers including Doubleday, Grosset & Dunlap, and Vintage Books, and later worked with Random House. The book shows how his finely crosshatched illustration and dark humor shaped his approach to cover design.

Steven Hellerโ€™s essay examines Goreyโ€™s work as an artist and designer. Heller writes, โ€œSuccessful cover design requires the expertise of an artist, typographer, poster designer, and logo maker. Many book design specialists were incapable of designing a cover or jacket with the same Gorey aplomb, even if they tried.โ€
