Art of Howl's Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki
The Art of Howl’s Moving Castle is a hardcover companion to Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film, based on the novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones. It collects concept sketches, fully rendered character and background drawings, paintings, and cel images, alongside interviews and comments from the production staff, including notes from Miyazaki.
After Spirited Away earned an Academy Award in 2003, Miyazaki turned to Howl’s Moving Castle. Set in a fantastical vision of 19th-century Europe shaped by science and magic, the film departs in some ways from its source novel while retaining its principal characters: Howl, a foppish wizard; a vain witch from the wastelands; an anthropomorphic chimney fire; a young girl with an unusual curse; and the towering moving castle itself. The film was a success in Japan before its U.S. theatrical release, which this book was published to accompany.
